When Chris Laney found out about the Chevy Colorado ZR2 back in 2017 he knew he had to have one. When he actually got the truck, it stayed stock for a while, but as you might expect, the world of off-roading and his love for camping grew after discovering overlanding. The final product is what you see here.

The ZR2 became Chris’ “take me to work and then where else I want” vehicle. Chris went for a mild overland built with the capability to run moderately hard trails. “It gets me where I want to go and absolutely love it.” Chris says, “I honestly have to say my favorite part of the build is the 701 wheel and tire combination fitted inside the AEV Highmark Fender Flares. The combination of all of those just give the truck an aggressive look. But it’s not just looks, it’s functionality too. They say bigger tires make for smaller bump and that is 100% true. Being able to fit 35” tires on stock suspension height is a game changer; I get the ground clearance without raising my center of gravity up too high.” Make your way to the front of the car and you’ll see an Addictive Desert Designs Stealth Fighter front bumper mated with a Rigid Industries Midnight Edition 30” light bar.

In the bed of the car you’ll find an RCI Offroad 12’ bed rack, a Roam Adventure Co. Vagabond rooftop tent, Red Maxtrax and two Rotopax 2.5 gal. Fuelpax. Suspension consists of the stock Multimatic hocks paired with Peak Suspension Adjustable coilover conversion kit, diff drip tie rod sleeves and a rear Add-A-Leaf kit. Under the hood is an ARB Highoutput air compressor on 589 Fabrication mounting bracket as well as an Auxbeam switch controller.

Like many builds Chris isn’t quite done with the ZR2 just yet. He plans to get an RSI smartcap canopy with an FSR Evolution tent on top. He adds, “Being able to keep my gear dry and also having a tent that opens up almost effortlessly would be a huge improvement at camp.

We asked Chris more about his wheel setup and why he went the route with the 701. Chris says, “Once I had started looking for wheels I had decided that I really wanted the black and bronze look, so when I found the Method 701 in bronze I knew that was the wheel I needed. It’s not too flashy, but had the bronze look I was going for and that paired with the Bead Grip technology, I was absolutely sold.” The integrated Bead Grip grooves found on both the inner and outer beat seat engages the tire bead for a stronger hold under extreme side load and lower air pressures. The wheel’s ‘safety hump’ is also a more aggressive profile to stabilize the tire bead in the seat. See below to learn more about the 701 wheel.
